Italy to continue lockdown until Easter as Infections rate drops

Image
Italy prime minister's   ROME: Italy on Monday extended an economically crippling lockdown until "at least" mid-April to stem coronavirus infections that have claimed a world-leading 11,591 lives. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said any easing of containment measures would be done incrementally to ensure Italy does not give up gains it has made against the extraordinary disease. The near three-week shutdown "had been very tough economically," Conte told Spain's El Pais newspaper. "It cannot last very long," he said. "We can study ways (of lifting restrictions). But it will have to be done gradually." Health Minister Roberto Speranza later announced that "all containment measures would be extended at least until Easter" on April 12. Business closures and a ban on public gatherings were to have expired on Friday. - 'Flattening of the curve' - Italy was the first Western nation to impose sweeping re

BRISBANE: Pakistan got their World Cup campaign back on track Sunday when the 1992 champions downed Zimbabwe by 20 runs to claim their first win of the tournament. Led by some patient batting from captain Misbah-ul-Haq , who made 73, Pakistan recovered from losing their first two wickets for just four runs to post 235 for seven from their 50 overs. Pakistan vs Zimbabwe: As it happened Towering left arm paceman Mohammad Irfan then took full advantage of the lively Gabba wicket to claim the first three Zimbabwe scalps on his way to a career-best 4-30. After posting what appeared to be a below par total, Irfan gave Pakistan the ideal start when he dismissed the two Zimbabwe openers in a lethal first spell. The 2.16-metre (7ft 1in) tall Irfan troubled the Zimbabwe openers with his bounce, both Chamunorwa Chibhabha and Sikandar Raza guiding lifting balls to Haris Sohail at second slip. Hamilton Masakadza (29) and Brendan Taylor saw off Irfan and settled the Zimbab

Austria asks Swiss to do new autopsy on dead Kazakh dissident

Image
(Reuters) - Austria has asked Switzerland to carry out an autopsy on Rakhat Aliyev, a Kazakh dissident found hanged in an Austrian prison last week, to dispel any suggestions of a cover up after a first post mortem found traces of sedatives. The authorities say Aliyev committed suicide and there was no indication of the involvement of any third party in the death, but Aliyev's lawyers have contested the official line on how their client died. "The authorities will exhaust all investigative possibilities to clear up (this case) completely and transparently," Justice Minister Wolfgang Brandstetter told the Oesterreich paper in an interview printed on Sunday. "Foreign experts will be brought in if needed. A second autopsy in Switzerland is set," said Brandstetter, who had been a lawyer for Aliyev before becoming minister. An initial post mortem in Austria found traces of obscure sedatives in Aliyev's body, which hardened his legal team's
